Starbucks just passed 42 million mobile payments - coming from 26 million in December 2011.
If it's convenient, quick and can be done from your smartphone - people WILL do it... In fact paying cash or with credit card now seem a bit old fashioned.
Imagine all the user metrics available (at least in theory) if we as consumers paid most of our shopping this way. Graphics on where we bought, expense art, amount, discounts, time of shopping, returning customer, push offers etc etc.
I am sure NFC phones will take this to the next level and will look forward being able to pay this way myself!

This article reminds me of a Google Offer I received in my inbox last week. The deal was, pay $5 for a $10 Starbucks egift card. While I don't drink Starbucks regularly, this is something my girlfriend can't live without, so I decided to purchase it. This was my first time purchasing something from Google Offers so I completed the payment online. Then I was instructed to download the Google Offer app onto my Android phone and redeem the gift card at my local Starbucks by showing them the app. Upon doing so, the workers had no idea how to redeem the gift card so they just gave me what I ordered for free. One would think that an offer such as this one would've gone viral and thousands of e gift cards would've already been redeemed at Starbucks across the nation. After I got home I decided to email Google Offers to see what went wrong. It turns out that this offer is only accepted at Starbucks locations that accept Starbucks card egifts. The funny thing is, that specific location accepts them-it's just that the workers had no idea how to process it. I'm sure it's just a matter of time until these payment methods become the norm. Until then, cheers to free Starbucks!
ReplyDeleteYour experience kind of proves that new marketing tools and technology doesn't mean that you can skip the communication part :o) But hey - as long as you receive free coffee...
ReplyDeleteSquare, is another cool device where you can pay using your smartphone or charge using a square card reader (free of charge) on any smart phone.
