Game Changer: In Video Entertainment

Verizon and Coinstar’s Redbox form joint venture to Create New Consumer Choice for Video Entertainment.  The venture’s services will offer all of the convenience, simplicity and value of Redbox® new release DVD and Blu-ray Disc® rentals combined with a new content-rich video on-demand streaming and download service from Verizon.

I work for VZ. In 2012, Verizon is going to provide more innovative products and exciting things in consumer video on demand.

  1. I use Redbox a lot. It's more convenient than Blockbuster because it's at my grocery store, so I don't have to make an extra trip somewhere else. It's also cheaper.

However, I wonder how long their business "model" can last because it's DVDs, and DVDs are being replaced with an even more convenient streaming -- assuming you have broadband.

This appears to be Redbox's first attempt at transforming their bricks business model into more of a clicks internet model.

  2. Thanks for posting this Sreepathi, I am researching the changing movie and video industry and it would have been great for me to be on the conference call. I'll try to find the replay link so I can get a better understanding of what are the implications this joint venture will have on movie and video distribution.
